7 super easy ways to revamp your LinkedIn profile

We are all quite fluent with posting content on LinkedIn. We are also slowly becoming better at engaging with comments on other people’s content. So what happens when you comment? If people like what you have said, they go to your profile.

Your profile is a window into who you are. It should tell them who you are, what you do and some bits of you personally. And this is the last place that you frequent yourself. So many of us have the same profiles that we put up when we created our accounts. A few of us keep refurbishing what’s on it.

Here are 7 easy ways to quickly do up yours. Quickly because you know exactly what you are searching for.

Profile URL

Your URL can read what you want it to read. And even better you can put in words there that people search for.

Mine reads- https://www.linkedin.com/in/anuradhaghoshwriter/

A few examples are:

https://www.linkedin.com/in/carol-tice-freelance-writing-business-coach-book-ghostwriter/

https://www.linkedin.com/in/thejlo/

The Jlo one really got me. The JLo. Wow. Superlative confidence guys!

You will see a ton of profiles who only have their name on the URL. That works too. It looks and reads a lot better than some kind of alpha numeric code next to your name.

  1. Go to “View profile”, on the top right, you will see “Edit public profile & URL”.
  2. Again on the top right you will see “Edit your custom URL”.
  3. That’s that.

Headline

Don’t be creative here please. State what you do, as simply as you can. Use words that people will most likely search for. That’s how your profile shows up. If I were to write “Transcending Organisations through Learning Intervention”- it wouldn’t do anything for the people who actually want to find you.

Often times, the headline is your designation. If your designation is exactly what you do, no harm done. But you often do a lot more stuff than just your designation. It helps to put all of that in.

Display pic

Both the images that I shared above have good display pics. Your face needs to show. It is your “profile” photo.

Header Image

LinkedIn gives you a default image. Feel free to change it. Your header image can have your contact details, your insta handle, your twitter handle. It can have a quote that you swear by. Imagine. It has to say something about what you do. It can also be a pic that shows what you do.

About

Now this is the space where you tell people what you do for a living.

  • If you are an entrepreneur, this space is great for copywriting. Tell them the problems that you solve for the customers and write about what rocks your boat.
  • If you are an employee, write about your role holistically with specific details.
  • If you are looking for a job, this is a great space to say that you are open for opportunities and what is it that you excel at.

Featured

There is a featured segment to your profile. Got to “Add profile section”, choose “Featured” and share links to your work. This is a powerful section where you can get people to look at the entire spectrum of what you do. Add links to your videos, tweets, instagram posts, anything that paints another side of you.

Experience

It doesn’t do to simply assign a designation and leave the rest blank. Talk about your role in detail. Put in all the stuff that you had to leave out from the About section. Use the names of clients that you’ve worked with (if you can without violating any confidentiality clause). It’s an SEO thing. Anytime people search for the client, you just might show up.


I revamped my profile this past week. It took me around 2 hours to get everything out there. I know there’s some bit of work still left. In some parts I’d like the language to be crisper and tight. And I will get to it.

Take time out every 6- 7 months to evaluate how your profile is faring. Make small edits, add in a new project that you are doing, update some information. There’s a lot more to the profile than only these 7 points, but they are a step in the right direction.
