It had been 3 days since she had seen him last. That hollow ache was back. That ache that had a heart beat. She hadn’t realized how she could have been so stupid to have fallen in love- again. He had called a few times, she chose to ignore.
Fate had other plans for tonight though.
Back from office as she was settling down with a book, the doorbell rang. She knew her mom would get it. A few minutes later, Sarthak walked into her room and closed the door behind him.
She kept gaping like a fish out of water.
His bandaged arm was well, still bandaged. He was able to walk though and was wearing that nice perfume. The one that she had begun to associate with him. Her brain gave her a mental kick! Wow! She had begun scent name associations too! Way to go for not falling in love.
What seemed to be microseconds to her love hazy brain turned out to be a couple of minutes. By then he had planted himself on her bed. He looked at her, very matter of fact, and said “you’ve been ignoring me”.
There was no accusation in that. It was a statement.
She just nodded at him, not trusting herself to speak. A few days ago, he had almost died in that car crash. That car crash had made her realise that she had feelings for a man that she didn’t want to know. He was a business associate. Someone that she did great work with. Plus after the last two fiascos of falling in love, she really wasn’t up for anymore drama.
Seeing him so close to her and in the flesh and looking promisingly alive, was overwhelming her. She was gulping to keep her tears down. He had been so small on that hospital bed. The doc had said, the brain injury could lead to coma. Turns out this guy was a miracle too. He seemed very non- comatose right now.
Suddenly she became aware of her very tiny shorts and that tee that hung way too low. Well it was a night Suit after all.
He lifted her face up and looked into her teary eyes. Why, he asked?
That little touch was doing things to her that she hadn’t felt in a long long time. She moved back, disengaging from that fingertip and said “I thought u needed space to recover and you have an army of people to look after you anyway”.
But they are not you. Again, a simple statement.
This is what she had loved about him from day one. Sorry, scratch that out. She liked this about him. He could keep a level tone and just say things as is. With as little emotion as one could muster.
For someone that has the emotional range as large as the solar system, his unemotional self was a healthy respite. It was the perfect antidote to herself.
She decided to keep things simple.
“I was shook when I saw you at the hospital. I hadn’t realised that I felt so deeply for you. In order for us to continue working together, it’s important that I don’t feel anything of that sort. So I decided that the best thing to do would be to get out of your personal space.”
“What do you feel for me?”. Turns out he was keeping it straight too.
